REPAIR WORKS, CONSERVATION AND INTRODUCTION TO THE TOURIST CIRCUIT OF THE CINCU FORTIFIED EVANGELICAL CHURCH ASSEMBLY.

Short history of the Fortified Church Cincu.

The fortified church of “Cincu” is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is one of the largest Roman basilicas located in a Saxon town in Romania. Due to the positioning of the building on a hill between the Olt and Hârtibaciu rivers, which has three very steep sides, the church is considered a unique basilica because its defense was only on the western side of the hill. The church was built in the village of “Cincu” in Brașov county by German settlers in the middle of the 13th century.

The pièce de résistance of the church is the altar representing the unbelief of the apostle Thomas, the altar featuring an altar stone inscribed with Jesus’ words to Thomas.

The ensemble of the Fortified Evangelical Church from Cincu has put on new clothes.

The project “REPAIR WORKS, CONSERVATION AND INTRODUCTION TO THE TOURIST CIRCUIT OF THE CINCU FORTIFIED EVANGELICAL CHURCH ASSEMBLY” was successfully completed. Implemented between February 2018 and December 2023, the project was financed by the Regional Operational Program 2014-2020, with a total value of approx. 2.775 million lei (the amount representing the total value of the project according to the contract), of which approx. 2.696 million lei is non-refundable financing .

Its objective was to increase the tourist attractiveness of the area by valuing and sustainable use of the heritage objective of the Cincu Fortified Evangelical Church Ensemble and introducing it into the real and virtual tourist circuit.

The specific objectives of the project concerned, on the one hand, rehabilitation works of the church ensemble, and on the other hand, the digitization of the heritage objective, as well as the preparation and operationalization of a marketing plan with socio-cultural actions that would consecrate the heritage objective in as a tourist attraction center and lead to an increase in the number of visitors, from 1,150 visitors in 2018, to 1,400, annually.

The interest shown by tourists will lead to awareness of the heritage value that the community harbors, especially for young people. It is difficult to assess the social or economic impact, but it is certain that Cincu and the community here have gained a vector of development and a chance to increase social cohesion.
